A Night at the Bassins des Lumieres

One of the highlights of our recent cruise was an unexpected excursion to the Bassins des Lumieres. The venue is the world’s largest digital art centre, and its history is in stark contrast to its modern purpose. During WWII this colossal building was a German submarine base, with a roof nine metres thick, built to withstand aerial attack.

Inside, this industrial relic has been transformed into a living canvas. We were there to see a stunning exhibition of the Egyptian Pharaohs. As we wandered through the massive space, we felt like we were in the heart of the pyramids. It was a true sensory experience – towering images of pharaohs and their history were projected over the walls and floor, and onto the surface of vast pools of water. The music, combined with the shifting light and the shimmering reflections, made it an unforgettable journey.

The visit was more than just a light show. It was a blend of history, art and technology that was a powerful and moving experience. It was a true highlight of our cruise and a must-see for anyone visiting Bordeaux.

Simple Pleasures

We’re halfway through our river cruise and every day has brought us new experiences. On Monday morning we stepped ashore after docking at Medoc where we found that some local artists had set up their shops in an old chateau where we were able to browse their unique creations.

The real treat that awaited us, however, was a special tasting of lovely fresh oysters paired with a local white wine. Sitting in the shade of an historic building, French music playing in the background, enjoying some local fare, surrounded by art. A moment of pure, simple pleasure.

Foodie Paradise: Our First Taste of Europe!

On Sunday we arrived at our boat, the SS Bon Voyage and discovered a great food market right next to the boat. Honestly, I could have spent ages just taking photos, but I was too busy being completely blown away by the sheer variety of breads, cheeses, pastries and more.

So many choices, I seriously want to sample every single thing!

I’ve already fallen head over heels for potatoes sautéed in butter, those perfectly crispy croissants and so much more. My taste buds are doing a happy dance!
